In-person/hybrid vs. remote work: which is better for a startup?

I run a business. It's a small VPS and VPN host.

While it's just me at the moment, say if I grow and hire more people. For you startup owners, is there value in having an office with in-person/hybrid work? Or is all-remote the way to go (and in-person/hybrid simply a layoff technique)?

Reddit is very biased towards remote work, but is only a subset of the population.

Prior to starting my business I was mostly a remote worker, a lot during COVID. I did in fact hate the job. I was hybrid in 2022 but went back remote for various reasons, and moved back to NYC in 2024.

There are advantages and disadvantages to remote and in-person work. For a startup, I think the advantages, specifically access to a larger (and likely cheaper) talent pool better fits the needs of a startup. A disadvantage is less team alignment, which can be compensated for with good management practices.

Remote. Using tools like virtual frosted glass (https://meetingglass.com/), you can mitigate the downsides of remote work, such as loneliness and isolation.
