Why is Gmail account recovery a pain in the ass?

All my electronic gadgets were stolen this week. I've interviews starting next week. I can't access my account because both my phone number and recovery email are gone. How can I avoid this next time? What alternative email service providers do you recommend?

Avoid this next time by using a password manager, keeping the list of recovery codes for that password manager in a safe place or two, and checking every so often that you can still find the recovery codes.
