I have been programming as a hobby (for fun) for the last seven years and have been the programming lead for my high-school’s FRC robotics team for the last three. With my current experience and academics I am likely to get into my first-choice college which has historically been a direct path to internships and employment. My worry is that once I graduate college, my degree would have been phased out (hence why I didn’t choose CS). Additionally, I feel that going directly to working would be an equally reasonable option for me.
- Is an ECE degree worth pursuing? - If I were to go directly to working, would my experience with robotics and open-source projects be enough for an employer to consider me? - If I were to go directly to working, are internships feasible to get without college?
Thank you for your time! Feel free to respond to any number of my questions.
I write media applications just for myself because I have an iPhone and the iOS ecosystem is shit. Tonight I met a guy who is some wealthy corporate VP of corporate sales somewhere. He passion is metal working so he is teaching himself crude black smithing in his garage.
I recommend getting that ECE degree because it will expand your capabilities. Also understand it’s not worth much unless you want to get a masters. I have met many ECE bachelor developers and most aren’t very good. I am self taught and can do things most of those guys can’t even imagine, so keep programming on your own.
I would go to school unless you are insanely cracked.
