I understood them getting support from the community while the angle was purely ideological but how does charging 100$ per month?Is it about paying for the servers and taking no profit?How do we know?

They "get away with it" because people give them money. How do you know what they do with the money? You probably don't and have to take it on faith or wait for a leak.
