How can we bust hype-driven ads by big players?

In recent years, we’ve seen a growing trend of hype-driven ads and marketing campaigns from major companies, often overselling capabilities or benefits. While some have become accepted as part of the game, there have been a few notable attempts to counteract these exaggerated claims.

For instance, platforms like Reddit and Hacker News have occasionally surfaced successful critiques, fact-checks, and deep dives that expose overblown narratives (e.g., critiques of overpromised AI capabilities, inflated cloud service benchmarks). However, these efforts seem sporadic and largely dependent on individual initiatives.

What are some successful past examples of hype-busting? How can we systematically create frameworks or tools to identify and expose misleading marketing claims, and empower the community to evaluate them critically?

Snake oil salesmen are a feature of humanity. There always were/are/will-be unscrupulous persons who will make exaggerated claims in order to sell some mediocre product. Then there also are a lot of people who prefer to believe in too good to be true claims.

I appreciate HN critiques, fact-checking, etc of overblown claims. However, it behoves decision-makers to verify claims and to proceed with caution. Being cynical and paranoid are essential survival mechanisms. Nothing will save the gullible.
