How often should company reorganizations happen?

I'm currently at a company where it feels like reorganization (without layoffs) is the main tool management uses to solve problems - we're talking more than once a year at a mid sized company. To me it feels like a sign that they lack a clear vision, but I want to hear your perspectives.

- What do you think drives a "reorg culture"?

- How frequently should structural changes happen in a healthy organization?

- What has been your experience with reorgs across different companies?

- For those who have been on the decision-making side, how do you view reorgs?

My view of reorgs is that they're an emergency move taken to put out some kind of fire. If a company is having one, that says something has gone very wrong with the company and they're taking strong steps to try to fix it.

If a company has reorgs on a regular basis, I take that as a sign that I should avoid that company, because they are failing to fix whatever their problem is.
