Which is more impressive: Tetris the game or creation of a new genre?

By a new genre, I don't just mean Tetris variants, but also other falling block games that look and play quite differently.

I wonder if Tetris an inevitable invention, and it would have likely been created within 15 years of the birth of video games, more or less the same, no matter what

One impressive thing about Tetris is that more people than ever play it 40 years after the game was created.

Another amazing thing is that CTWC (Classic Tetris World Championship) [0] launched in 2010, and still runs, bringing new generation of players every year.

Even more impressive, in recent years those new generations of players found new creative ways to use the original NES gamepads (e.g. rolling) to get to levels that were previously unreachable to humans.

There’s great documentary about Tetris and CTWC: Ecstasy Of Order [1].

There was very addictive Tetris-clone called VIR. It had falling viruses and strange rules of annihilation and contamination. I have only seen it on HP100LX palmtop 1992, and it did not run on other MSDOS-machines.
