Will AI ever be funny again?


I used to get GPT2 to write stories about all sorts of things.

And man, they were funny - really laugh out loud funny.

Of course they often also led rapidly to one of the main characters going on a murderous rampage and killing everyone, so you had to do a fair bit of filtering.

Even so, today's AI seems totally not funny and very serious.

Will AI be funny again?

I added custom instructions to ChatGPT. Even in the most boring programming code it adds random references to Back-to-the-Future movies. I'm sure I could get it to surprise me even more.

Have you tried local language models? I've gotten some laugh out loud moments with the open Mistral models and with the Llama models. It just needs the right system promoting.
