Great communties on Mastadon, IRC, Forums other small networks?

I'm a car enthusiast. Some of the best communities for cars are very much based on web forums, despite having a large presence in popular social media.A lot of open source communities are active on IRC.What are some communities that you're aware of that have it's primary base on the old internet, and the new open internet?

Unfortunately the nature of the modern internet means that the best way to preserve a great community in the short term is to keep it secret.

Sadly IRC is fast becoming a ghost town.When projects flocked from Freenode to Libera a lot of people dropped IRC all together. Which is a shame, modern IRC clients are pretty good.
