Are there any cool applications of Machine Learning left?

Seems like everything is just optimization SLOP made beautiful by a sexy and trendy "Machine Learning" wrapping. optimizing user engagement, sales, recommendations, etc. driven by cheap consumerism. ChatGPT was cool enough but I havent come across a single application of LLM that seems worthwhile. I don't give a damn about specialized chatbots, sorry

Closest I can think of is biotech ML a la alphafold and genomics research. Anything else? I'm getting discouraged by the field and I'd love to change my mind

(dont get me wrong - pure ML research is fascinating! but how is it being used in a way that is real)

If you come to think about it, in the beginning computers automated existing tasks and only later were giving tasks that people aren't capable of doing (eg. timing in electronics). Maybe there is a range of useful tasks people aren't doing yet, because they are too difficult, so nobody thought about them, but AI might unlock that?
