HACKER Q&A

How many of you are fighting with Win11

Like slow explorer,

explorer randomly poops up to get your attention,

nonsense two layer context menu on everything,

now "open in PowerShell" suddenly missing after weekend.

What's wrong with Win11's developers?

I have no problem with Windows 11, I have an M.2 SSD drive, 32 Gig of RAM, 4.0 GHz Intel i9. Explorer is not slow. This is a $1,800 PowerSpec PC from Microcenter.

I easily adapt to changes made to Windows 11. I'd rather run Ubuntu but I have Windows-only apps that I need.

Not affiliated with the original author, but this tool has made my life so much easier by being able to get rid of all the awful components of Windows 11.

I have a windows 11 machine I recently imaged using their latest ISO and Rufus [0] to burn the image which Microsoft recommend so I could skip the Microsoft account creation and hardware checks. The first thing I do is run windows update, reboot, then O&O's ShutUp10 [1] which also works on W11. Just these few things has prevented any ads or other nonsense. I have not seen any slowness or ads. The license tied to the hardware is for W11 Pro. The home edition may be a different experience. I also block some DNS requests [2] on my firewall / router running Unbound so that could also be masking some garbage.

The hardware I bought had 2 pieces of malware installed from the OEM image so I have gone back to the practice of reinstalling the OS from a pristine image and that may be helping avoid some OEM cruft.

Win11 seems to work pretty well for me, although I use a lot of 3rd-party alternatives:

- Directory Opus instead of explorer

- Git Bash instead of PowerShell

- Rarely need/use items from two layer context menus

---

I think the biggest pain points are:

- occasionally restarts to install an update (automatically)

- DPI gets weird (laptop screen + monitor at different scales)

edit:

Oh, I forgot: T480s used to occasionally suddenly and unexpectedly start beeping loudly and shutdown. After I figured out why it was doing this (it thought the battery was critically low even though it was plugged in with over 80% charge), I changed some Windows setting so there would be a longer delay before it panicked.

I often listen to the Windows Weekly podcast. Paul Thurrott talks a lot about how Windows, especially Windows 11, is getting worse. He mentions problems like more prevalent ads, the computer not using the internet browser you like, slower performance, missing features, and pushing other Microsoft services like OneDrive on users.

Tiny11Builder doesn’t fix all the issues, but it does make Windows 11 easier to use (they even talked about it on last week’s episode of Windows Weekly).

I don't fight it. I recently bought a new laptop that came installed with 11. I installed Linux Mint alongside 11. I only use 11 to play steam games and I always boot into airplane mode, so never get annoyed with Microsoft nagging, never get an update that destroys my dual boot arrangement, etc.

I use Linux for real work.

I find it's much easier and cleaner to Uninstall on windows 11 compared to messy macos.

There's a good thread on 4chins /g...Friendly Windows Thread

Everything you could ever want to know about Windows and what to do to make it tolerable.

I don't have any issues with Win11, it actually runs really well on a Beelink Minipc I have (5600U).

I used it in a vm and as an bootable image for updating firmware. Im happy the company i currently work for still uses 10.

No fighting at all. It's perfect for me. Nothing is slow. Everything works.

Am also curious. 10 is bugging me all the time to switch.
