How do I learn about designing my own LLM?

I’m a full stack consultant with a background in Analytics looking to learn about designing my own simple LLM’s. Where do I start? Just purely to understand how they work and not necessarily try to launch any commercial product. Last time I did this for cryptography, I learned a lot.
