The current implementations are rather ridiculous, you either get a giant pop-up where you can at least say no or - which is more prevalent in my experience - you get a little a message saying we are using cookies whether you like it or not, you can close this by clicking on the "Accept" button.

What if sites would be required to request similarly to camera/microphone access? This way, users would get a consistent experiences across the web and also, developers would have to actually prepare for both responses.

Yes: not many, but some sites have realised they don't need cookies at all (and hence avoid the whole consent thing)

Luckily those are the sites I wish to visit.

I don't think so but they waste tons of people's time every day in the world... they should just default to: no, I don't want cookies that aren't required for this site's basic functionalities to work as intended.
