What are some lesser-known computer programming publishers?


I'm writing a programming book, and I haven't been lucky in convincing the famous publishers (O'Reilly, Manning, Apress, PragProg, etc.), to publish my book. I was curious if there are some other, perhaps newer, programming publishers that are just starting up and with which I can try my luck?

Self publishing is an option, of course, but if you don't have an audience, the chances of making a single sale are very low.

As tomcam said, why not self-publish? There are lots of options for self-publishing both ebooks and print books nowadays (in formats like PDF and ePub), and many options for selling them too.

Plus, it is not mutually exclusive with going with a traditional publisher. You can do both.

And you may be able to negotiate a better deal with a publisher if you sell some books on your own first. I've read that some people have done that.

What is the topic?

Another is No Starch Press. Have you tried Packt? I thought Packt would publish anything.

Do you have any idea what kind of percentage you will get from sales? I've heard that it is very difficult to make a good return from book sales unless it is a huge success.

Why not self-publish?
