Does Hacker News have manipulation protections?
Hacker News’ moderation methods are notoriously heavy handed, relying heavily on explanation-less shadow bans. The reasoning for this is that HN doesn’t have enough funding for a full moderation team, which makes a lot of sense to me. And it clearly works, that’s why we’re all here! But that got me wondering while reading the Boeing and Apple threads today: does this ethos apply to non-disruptive manipulation? I really don’t see any reason why a large company wouldn’t make a few dozen accounts and vote up and down the comments and threads that they like, taking care not to trigger the traditional HN tripwires of politics, insults, exclusive downvoting, etc.
Given how undeniably important this forum is to the global tech scene, is that something they’re thinking about? Hoping there’s a link somewhere or I can get a three word “yup, don’t worry” from a mod, haha. If not, hire some AI nerd (me!) for peanuts to write topic-analysis tools to quantify users on a symbolic level or something…
