[1] Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder - Nonfiction - I read this book between classes in college and love it. The way it illuminates factors and people around the early pc days is awesome, and I remember taking some solace in "mushroom management" from the shoddy quality of my university's administration.
[2] Dealers of Lightening - Nonfiction - Another book from college. Absolutely love it too, specifically how it shows the 'blue sky' nature of early computers. People had so many awesome ideas about how this new technology could be used.
[3] Cult of the Dead Cow - Nonfiction - I read this more recently. A great look at hacker culture; including the difficult, unhappy aspects. If you fall outside a certain political segment it may have some frustrating elements, since it talks up Beto O'Rourke's 2020 campaign.
[4] The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll - Nonfiction - Follows an 80's computer scientist as he tracks intruders in his campus's network. A great and well written story.
[5] Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson - Fiction - Required reading.
