Those with memory loss, how do you respond when asked about your past?

I was reading another HN post about HR asking personal questions such as life story. I can’t remember anything past 5 or 6 years ago. With friends & random associates, you can just lie or say you can’t remember. However, companies may have background checks & saying “I don’t know” could be a sign of disability.

How do you get around it?
