Interviewing for a CTO Role?

What should I expect. The company is about 70 employees. 30 devs in India and Mexico.

Recruiter said I’d have to travel to Mexico but India would be a choice.

I’m more curious what the role would entail.

It sounds like a company that offshores to reduce cost, so its likely a less consumers product or B2B where the quality of the interface, etc isn't as important.

With this in mind keep in mind the CTO role is about business objectives, low cost and SLAs (reliability) as opposed to say for example, experimenting with the latest technology, bleeding edge, etc.

The software stack is also likelier to be more mainstream (i.e Java/PHP/Javacript) and more 'generic'/off the shelf. Not sure if that helps you but you know what you're working with.

So expect:

- Awareness about mainstream products/languages and stacks

- How to deal with SLAs and reliability

- Don't expect using newer/bleeding edge technologies, if there is something new like AI itll probably be wrapped around something common or off the shelf as well.

Then ask :-) From recruiting hundreds of people and some managers, and helping CTOs as a coach, I think people ask not enough questions. And not questions that they have read somewhere, but deep questions that show their understanding of the situation and challenges and their interest in the company.

And don't undersell yourself on the salary when asked. Go +10% abve what you feel comfortable with.
