Why is there no dark theme?
It's 2023 coming on 2024,a dark theme is to be expected and isn't that difficult for such a basic site. And with prefers-color-scheme, this can be done 100% in css without the need for javascript. Yes, there are extensions yadda yadda, but this should be a native feature.
I get the impression that a dark mode/dark theme isn't a priority for YC, even though it seems to be a priority for more than a few users of HN. I doubt YC puts a ton of resources into this site, which could be another reason a dark mode/theme is taking a long time to appear.
I was thinking the same, even proposing PRs to some projects, but it looks like dark theme has the lowest priority even for the ready PR
This has been asked numerous times. Here is one such thread with an answer from dang[0].
tl;dr is that it might happen, but it isn't a priority and because the default design principle for this forum is "move slowly and preserve things," if it ever does happen, it won't happen for a long time (note the linked thread is from 2020.)
Just get a plugin or something.
