Can a fully remote manager be effective?

Hi HN,

I find myself in a peculiar situation. During COVID when remote/hybrid work became huge, my team's manager moved back to his home country. This was fine at the time, but with return to office this year, our team is now in a strange situation - our manager is fully remote and the entire team is colocated/in office.

Has anyone been in this situation before - fully remote manager with in-office team? If so, how did you make it work? My current feeling is it's not sustainable. But I'd like to make it work, if possible. So any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Hypothetically: Could these issues be from the core of the team now being co-located again? Yes, I understand the manager's role and is accountable for that. That said, perhaps viewed from a slightly different POV might help y'all figure out a better way forward.

I feel a manager needs to lead by example. If the team is collocated again then the manager should be there.
