Well a couple of sites that offered string searches but went the way of the dodo after certain companies got their way, the old computing.net of early 2000s essence before it took its unfortunate path, and tehparadox.com (which though a warez forum and yeah it was bound to die, it had an interesting and diverse community that someone would answer those tricky technical questions in regard to tv media, etc.)

Off the top of my head, I can only think of three: Geocities (as much as I appreciate NeoCities, it's not quite the same), AltaVista, and Bert is Evil.

iwon.com - a search aggregator / search gaming site that a) produced pretty good results (back in its day) and offered prizes for using it

altavista.com - before Google, the single best search engine in existence (predated by altavista.dec.com - since it started as a DEC project in the early-mid 90s)
