How to start working in private intelligence?

I have a particular set of skills in gathering and analyzing information via various (legal) means. OSINT is the most appropriate term.

I'm a very experienced data generalist and way more technical and experienced than most of the employees I see working in these companies already.

I usually work as a freelancer around more traditional companies but would like to work in a private intelligence project for fun = interest.

The problem is, though: a) through their standard recruiting channels, they seem to hire for very shallow roles (solutions architect etc.), and b) they don't seem to be very open about remote works and/or gigs. For instance, most of them are based around Arlington, VA (oh well) and London. Both of which are far from my home.

Any ideas/intros are welcome.

If you'd like to get in touch directly, please do so via smart.shepperd (at) outlook (dot) com or comment with info and I'll reach out

One idea may be to look into private security companies that do physical security, private investigations and skip tracing otherwise called bounty hunting. That is where all the bounty hunters I have known started off as the company could help them get certifications and licensing required for the state they are in and also helped them learn additional legal means of gathering data on people and also taught them where the lines are that they should not cross. That combined with your existing skills should prove valuable to one of those companies. With time you would also learn all the "grey" areas in the legal system. Perhaps you could partner with the people doing the physical skip tracing and split bounties.

Business investigative journalism. This is a growing field.

Forensic accounting firms.

Consulting firms (the biggies) do the same sort of thing.

Due diligence for M&A law firms.

Research Associates, Inc. (they do background checks) 27999 Clemens Rd. Westlake, OH 44145 (800) 255-9693

Lexis/Nexis does this sort of thing.

State licensing commissions (law, real estate, business) also have investigators
