HACKER Q&A

What are your go-to methods for promoting your project?

I feel that there is a saturation of new products and that the more cliche promotional channels, such as Instagram Ads, etc. is either ineffective or too costly.

I try to implement more forward thinking and unconventional strategies as I find them yielding better results.

What are some examples of such strategies in your opinion? Or rather, what have been the most effective channels you've utilized?

I post it here. HN is a fun place and I love the kind of discussions that come out of it. I get excited when I'm about to post something.

For stuff related to my main website, it's basically social media (reddit, twitter, linkedin) + a few business partners + a few friends. I'll do a bit of link building where appropriate.

Social media in particular has picked up dramatically in the past year as I started posting more about my work (see @aboutberlin on twitter). I have underestimated the value of an audience. I get ten thousand eyeballs on anything I publish. I also got a network of helpful people and industry insider out of it. I can definitely vouch for working in public.

The secret is simple: be a pleasant participant, not a self-interested promoter.

I have been able to get some traction via subreddits. They are a good source of early beta testers.

Other than that, content and email marketing would be an effective approach to consider.

Same situation as you. Pushing hard on content (quick demo video has been really helpful for us). That and targeted emails to people having their own community (substack NL most often)
