What caused sites to start recommending passkeys, and are they better?

I've noticed that a few websites that I use have started telling me to use a passkey, as well as some password managers.What made these services push this?Are passkeys superior?Is there a drawback?

Depends on your security perspective. Your credentials are tied to a device. Some of those have device specific methods for backup/restore such keys.
There are some benefits too. If you passkey from Site A gets compromised, it doesn't affect other services. If the password gets compromised and you used it elsewhere too, you might run into problems.
Services have the advantage of not having to store a password without needing to use external auth providers.
