Why has more people started calling themselfs software engineer?

Why doesn't people want to call themselfs software developer? Does Software engineer sound better?

"Both software developers and software engineers work on developing software. However, software developers often focus on one part of software development, while software engineers focus on the big picture. In simple terms, software development is a part of software engineering." (Source: The Forage)

In my opinion, what you're seeing is either: 1. People are unaware of this difference and just throw terms around for better prestige 2. More people are actually upskilling/getting certified to a "software engineer" to stand out from the competition in today's competitive and demanding job market.

I used to ask myself the same question a year ago, but with regards to the rise of people calling themselves "influencers" or "life coaches" lol.

I'd assume it's the usual human titles-and-status game. If every lower-end worker tinkering with software seems to be a "developer", then an "engineer" must be somebody higher up, or in some cool specialty, or something...right?
