How to break into the embedded software engineering field?

My background is web development / backend stack. I've learned about data structures and C/C++ programming while also solving programming puzzles from ProjectEuler.net and leetcode.

A friend gave me an msp430 development kit (a micro-controller along with the board that helps programming it), and I slowly became interested in the field, I'm just not sure how I would approach changing careers or the kind of knowledge I should pursue to help me. So, I would appreciate any advice.

I would suggest building some projects for a few months and then start applying to relevant companies. Which country are you based in?
