Why does the audio in my Mercedes sound distorted?

It is trivially easy to damage car speakers in my experience. If it's just an issue with one speaker, there's probably some form of mechanical failure in that specific unit. If the distortion is across all of your speakers, it probably comes down to the receiver or wiring.
