Is Mountain View Dead?

I had a very pleasant experience in Mountain View back in 2019 when I was flown out to interview at a FANG company. Almost everyone I saw out and about was a software engineer or worked in high tech in some capacity. When I went to watch a movie the night after the interviews, there was some corny joke about algorithms in the movie and the entire theater busted out laughing. I really enjoyed that.

After the movie I went to get some dinner and walk around at shops and the park and heard people talking about tech and discussing ideas and having fun doing so. I was just by myself since I was only there for two days but I enjoyed taking it all in and came away from that experience yearning for longer-term immersion in a culture like that. Making new friends and being steeped in a rich tech culture in a tech hub seemed like a cool thing and I was definitely leaning towards relocating there if things worked out.

Unfortunately the interviews didn't pan out due to hiring freezes and then covid affecting everything shortly afterwards. Is this experience gone after covid and remote work? Mountain View is the only place I've seen so far that I'd be really excited to relocate to for a tech job. I've checked out Redmond and Seattle and San Francisco and didn't like them as much. Mountain View left a really good first impression on me and even seemed like a good place to both enjoy an expansive tech culture and also eventually start a family in a good environment. (Redmond second). I also saw a lot more cute tech girls when I was out and about in MV, whereas SF in my experience was mostly dudes. Redmond was really nice but I mostly saw families rather than singles, so my plan would be to relocate there after having kids in MV, when they're old enough to enjoy outdoors activities.

So is MV still about the same as in late 2019/early 2020 before covid happened?

“The average Mountain View home value is $1,779,174”

While most of the current gen doesn’t know it, the reason they all came to SF originally was because there was zero housing in coolville valley.

Of course nobody blames those cities, there’s just an expectation SF is obligated.
