How to Ask Money for Feedback?

From time to time, people approach me to give feedback on their design/project due to my background in the area. How do you politely steer this into a conversation about compensation?

“Sure, I’d love to help. Here’s a link to my schedule to book the most convenient time. I normally charge $500 an hour, but since this is our first chat, here’s a code to take $200 off that. Looking forward to digging in together!”

You can set up calendly or equivalent with stripe. Come up with an introduction script, let the tooling handle gating the actual block of time with payment. You can come up with a series of ‘objection’ scripts to cover pretty much every negative response you’d get:

“I hear you, no one likes paying, but it’s taken me a long time to learn all this stuff and unfortunately I have a family to house and feed”

“Unfortunately I can’t accept equity because my accountant has made me aware of some adverse tax implications that would really screw up my filing this year”

“You’re right, we do go way back, let me take another $100 off, lower than I’ve done for anyone else”

How about: That sounds like an awesome project! Let me see if I can schedule a time slot for an intake. I usually charge X / hour, how much time do you think we'll need?
