Personally, I tend to tap on 'Next', since that gives me an idea of the length of the discussion under a comment. The other drawback with minimizing is that when I log in with JavaScript disabled there is no way for me to maximize the comment back since the minimized comment state is maintained against my account.

I pointed my smart RSS reader YOShInOn at the comments firehose together with other feeds and thought the results were promising but there were too many low quality comments. (YOShInOn's feature set is excellent for identifying interesting topics, not so good at quality.) The UI for YOShInOn is basically like TikTok or Stumbleupon in that it shows you something and you can favorite, thumbs up or thumbs down things. Based on those judgements it trains a classifier to show you things you like with diversity enforced by clustering the documents and showing the top N from each cluster.
I unsubscribed from that but I do subscribe to
https://hnrss.org/bestcomments
which are high scoring. Pooled with 80 other feeds I see some pretty good comments now.
