If you haven’t ever tried doing home construction work, I highly recommend Habitat for Humanity. You can find your local chapter here: https://www.habitat.org/volunteer/near-you/find-your-local-h...
As a retired Psychotherapist I too had to include daily tasks of self care to keep myself in tip top psychological order to work with the most demanding and challenging mental health clients.
It is drummed into all undergraduate psychotherapists that self care is very important.
Even the lofty BACP say this about self care: Self Care is an ongoing process of caring for yourself; making a conscious effort to do things that maintain, improve and repair your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness. It’s about having awareness of your own being, identifying needs … Protecting and preserving yourself in the face of challenging work, self-care is also important when dealing with the troubles that arise from our personal life e.g. bereavement, illness, family difficulties, financial stresses etc.
Most people however do not work with the most damaged people in society and do not need self care. They just need to live life.
If you do not have an awareness of your own being you should start your venture into the world of self care with some psychotherapeutic counselling or psychotherapy and identify your needs.
You will learn so much more about what drives you and why you feel that you need self care in the first place rather than engaging in the mind numbing process of self care by internet.
Businesses love the self care industry. Rather than blaming the businesses for their overworked, undervalued and stressed staff they can blame the lack of self care by those same staff. Very convenient
We here a lot about work life balance but who really has a job that work and life are shared equally?
Its hiding in plain sight
