What can I do about power struggles?

I'm an industry veteran. I happily work, enjoy getting being, because I get to work on interesting things, usually with interesting people, and take them to production.

But I'm sick to death of power struggles. It doesn't matter if it's a tiny startup, a FAAAAANG, open source companies or frankly anything in between - eventually some form of a power struggle leads to a massive change. My current example - has my CTO leaving, meaning pretty much everyone reporting to him sees the possibility of becoming him - meaning different groups are fighting, and aligning to own my team. This is dysfunctional to say the least.

I would just like to work, and keep enjoying my work. I remember ages ago (~1998) a company had written into their contract that anyone could reject a promotion, or a move to another team. Until our company was purchased by BigCorp and issued new contracts - that utopia lead to years of successful products that grew massively financially, and people wise. It led to BigCorp buying us - for the obvious reasons.

So how can I excise these from my life? I just want to work. I just want to enjoy my work, and the people I work with. I frankly have ZERO desire to spend a second of my private life attending another mandatory dinner, or office event. I want to spend time with the people from the office I like - and I want to avoid all of these power struggles, that are basically the reason behind the formentiond mandatory events.

Support a candidate that will make that happen for you. Power struggles are relevant. "Just wanting to work" means ceding control of your life to others. Better get involved now and endure some discomfort while supporting your candidate than regret it till your retirement.

If you are an industry veteran, work at some point will/has become optional.

At this point you can live your final paragraph, and signalling that you are serious about it up front will minimise the number of times you have to walk to preserve the lifestyle.
