How are you fighting apps for mundane things, extreme data collection?

My building installed new washer dryers. To use them:

1. I need to download an app

2. I need to add my credit card, load up some amount (don't worry, there is "auto-refill" for my convenience, how thoughtful!)

3. I need to scan the QR code on the washing machines to wash

Ah yes, the app has "History" complete with date time, amount spent on washing etc.

Now some shitty company somewhere knows my full clothes washing history, complete with credit card, address etc down to the exact washing machine used.

Can't wait for the day where I have to use an app to pee, in my own apartment's rest room. That way someone can have precise data on my peeing habits.

I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I wouldn't be surprised if my building's owner gets a cut out of this whole enterprise for using this company's "services"

I am just fed up, I can't even wash my clothes without having access to a 800$ smartphone?

End of rant

I feel your angst.

I'm not in an area that's quite as caught up with the idea everyone has access to a smart phone, but still there's public services I'd like to access but I need to set up a smart phone. I'm not going down the road where I need to voluntarily prostrate myself for well meaning people who can't build or afford to hire someone else to have a good all round access web site to do the same ... if not better ... well of course a non tamper app on android (I've not idea what the story is with apple) takes away the ability for someone to block data scraping.

I have a simple rule, if x can't build a web site (that I could use with a mere simple laptop) ... I don't trust their app.

So this likely doesn't apply to you directly, but if this is restricted to a specific app and the app is crap, it may be an ADA issue? (Or comparable law outside of the US) Doesn't address the actual issue, but if you ever want to fight about it, that's one potential way.

A lot of reported issues with the system not working could also do the trick.
