Is it possible to run Linux on an old Virgin Media TiVo?


I changed broadband supplier and Virgin Media (UK) don’t want their TiVo box back. It’s a Samsung SMT-C7100.

I was about to break it open for the HDD, but this seems like a shame, because obviously it’s a whole little computer with Ethernet, HDMI, USB and a 500GB drive.

Is there any chance this is going to run Linux for me?

Have you done any research about it already?

My intuition wonders about firmware flashing and guesses there's likely an open source project that's several years old about opening these up. But I'd have to google it.

Especially if the answer is "no" you should insist that they dispose of it properly as WEEE...
