Would people want their grandchildren to live with them via MR and AI?

That is, they could use mixed reality headsets in combination with AI simulations of their grandchildren.

Would people want this especially if their grandchildren rarely visit/talk to them?

I would like to have an ability to interact with my grandparent's cortex, because there is a reason that we the mortals use to visit or talk to grandgrandparents rarer than we would like.

I have no idea. I personally wouldn't want that at all. If my grandchildren rarely visit and I want them to, fake grandchildren won't fill that void.

I think they would eventually feel lied to and get even more depressed when they come to the realization they are actually more lonely with the faux grandchildren. This could also get confusing. As people age their memories can get corrupted. They will have memories with their family that did not actually occur. They may get into contentious conversations when their real grandchildren show up leading to more depression especially when the grandchildren do not want to visit someone having false memories. "Mom! Grandma is getting weird again!"

This was covered in an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation [1] Geordi falls in love with an AI character but then meets her in real life and things get awkward real fast.

You may be onto something though. There are already people that have "AI" girlfriends. There is probably a market for people that wish they lived with particular celebrities and other fictional characters. Maybe someone would want Thor or Loki as a room-mate? A fictional character would not have preexisting real memories with the person.

Or perhaps this could be used for people that have lost loved ones to help them cope with the loss and perhaps add some closure even if it is not real. Therapist in a box I only suggest this one to make the corporate lawyers cringe.

No. If they want noise, lies and pictures of humans they'd just turn on the TV. They visit their grandchildren to hear about their real-world accomplishment and reflect on how they've grown. Replacing that engagement with a digital recreation borders on inhuman cruelty, frankly. There is almost certainly no market for this.
