Are religious computer scientists avoiding AI research now?

Maybe they are worried that working on an AI that may harm society would put their heavenly afterlife in jeopardy?

I don't think you even need to be particularly religious to be disgusted by the whole thing. Infinite clickbait generator, automated forum shill, endless copyright-infringement re-mix, digital telemarketer horde, electric pedestrian mower ("only a few more years to fully-autonomous driving!")... Only part of it that gives me a warm-fuzzy would be autotranslation.

Then there are the vile people trying to "regulate" it because, turns out, their moats weren't nearly as deep as they thought they were. Even though regulating ML would be like regulating long-division, given how venal and/or mentally challenged most politicians are, Altman may actually complete his "Hail Mary" pass.

Smart religious people will invent some, for them plausible reason for why it was all God's plan all along. Better to not touch that topic.
