HACKER Q&A

Seeking a simple free blogging platform that works on old machines.

I won't talk about how much better it all used to be.

Looking for a simple FREE platform where I can write articles and use basic html (markdown if I must).

I cannot believe I have to ask HN, but every search engine sends the same toplist of mainstream platforms that are un-useable for me.

Where are the simple and small free/donateware blogging platforms??

Thanks in advance.

If you are familiar with Git / Github, you could consider using dedicating a repo to your various articles.

I am a big fan of Markdown myself and used it for my entire teaching career. Perhaps you can see if this tool meets your needs? I built it for my own lecture notes and presentations, and am currently adding new features: http://lectureapp.io/

It would help if we knew what you meant by "unuseable for me" and "works on old machines". What is an old machine? Do you want to run your own blogging server on your own hardware, or have an account on a hosted blogging site?

I'd have to look amongst some old bookmarks on a backup to prompt my memory of the older sites that could still exist - but the problem is the big search engines don't go near them to even spider them in the first place, so little discovery by potential readers.

Depends on what you want to write about, but maybe a wiki hosted by a free host might do the job.

Would a self-hosted static website be an alternative?

You could use your HTML skills, rent a cheap virtual server with nginx, and buy a web domain. Advantage: You are not dependent on the existence of a free platform provider, so your blog will still exist in 10 years.
