Where does software developers go now, with AI/GPT4?

I have seen a lot of posts like this. I have refrained from making one until now. Not said anything when GPT first released. Even after the ground breaking GPT3.5. Maybe it is just getting to me now? I really am not sure if this post is a valid HN post as per the guidelines.

For context, I have been a Full Stack Developer for only a year now. Pretty much a junior developer still. I was excited and just changed my role to a developer one. I have a lot of ideas that I am keen on building. I have a clear cut path laid out by myself. But will that be enough?

But seriously, how long do we have until a mass layoff on top of the current one that is going on?

Something feels different with the current atmosphere. The amount of stories like the person who lost the freelance job from reddit was crazy!

Or am I just in the bubble with too many AI related stories/content?

PS: Another reason for asking is that I am pretty sure that there are people like me who are not sure if we are in a bubble or not.

I know this probably won't make you feel any better but you just have to wait and see. We don't really know what the impacts of these models will be even in the medium term. It is way too early to be making specific plans. I think the best you can do is keep up to date with the best tools, keep your ears and eyes open, try to build up a buffer of savings, and to the extent that you can try to diversify your skill-set and assets.

Its a good time to start messing with LLM repos on GitHub. To me, job prospects seem much better if you (for instance) already have some prompt engineering experience, or can finetune LLaMa derivatives.

These AI arent going to replace everyone, but they are definitely going to augment the job.
