Why can Google Bard do math?

Question

It can correctly answer questions like "What is (27 * 5.3866 - 73)^1.01 - 1/43.8 + sqrt(pi) ?"Neither GPT 3.5 nor Bing Chat get this right. Did Google add a special case for this, or did Bard actually learn the rules of arithmetic?

I would imagine Google special cased this since their search box has supported arithmetic for ages, and they can't have it be a lesser experience.
