Want to create a drawing app, where do I start?

I see tons of "Build %cool_tech_name% yourself in %cool_language%" material on the internet.

But struggle to find anything for those who want to create their own Photoshop graphics editor.

Where can I find good guides/books to algorithms and ideas that make a 2D drawing app?
