What and where is the best place to start with self-hosted smart home?

For somebody totally new to the world of smart home automation, but is fairly technical and capable of setting up self-hosted services, where is the best place to start? Strong preference for open source solutions but very willing to buy hardware (and software) if it's freedom-respecting enough.
