How will social media change in the next years?

BeReal, Discord, Snapchat, these are companies that are shaping the next generation of social, at least in my opinion. BeReal with authenticity, Discord with letting you join servers you like, Snapchat with letting you connect with your friends and give you an array of creative tools. I THINK the future of social media will be more private. Messaging is the new social IMO. The current big social platforms are entertainment platforms now, you don't even see anything from your friends.

So I think the change in social will be that people will want to join private spaces to talk with their friends, or with like-minded people. Do you also agree?

I'd love to hear your opinions.

The terms 'Social' & 'Private' are not compatible. Even if the service markets itself as privacy-centric or privacy-aware, users will expose details about themselves in some way. The platform might reduce the amount of PII but the users themselves will reveal stuff they wish they hadn't.

I am experimenting with an intelligent RSS reader that has a content-based recommender as opposed to the social recommender that people are used to.

The figure of merit for this sort of thing is “area under the receiver operating characteristic curve” and with a very simple model I get around 73%, I was reading that Tik Tok gets 80% so I don’t think I am doing too bad.

Mastodon is the next big thing in social media: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34916396. Twitter fiasco is making its growth even faster.

Social media should increase your number of friends in real life, but that's not been my experience. There's a lot of lonely people out there, so many somebody will figure this out.

Maybe people will go outside more? Who knows.
