Why pay for ChatGPT premium instead of using GPT3 playground?

ChatGPT is fine tuned to be a chatbot. It is likely a pretty decent amount of work/credits to train GPT3 to do what ChatGPT does. I'm sure there are instances where this would make sense though. It is a little bit like asking "why would I buy an omelette when I could just buy the eggs?"

The models aren’t comparable. ChatGPT is better in some ways, particularly in giving “reasonable” responses to naive prompts, and producing acceptable length on requested writing like essays. It’s also much less agreeable — ChatGPT will refuse many inappropriate requests, but the API models never do. The API models will gladly produce offensive or controversial writing if requested, and don’t need to be “jailbroken” the way ChatGPT does.

I bought Plus because ChatGPT is obviously overloaded and often doesn't work. So clearly they need people to start paying otherwise they won't be able to continue offering it as a business. And also it works.

I would use Ask HN but so far almost all of my submissions are nearly completely ignored so here is a somewhat related question. Has anyone heard anything about the OpenAI Foundry thing that will supposedly cost $78000 and have a 32000 token length? For me it’s just the formatting. For the click to copy code and the tables. So yeah, paying 20/month for CSS. Still use gpt-3 when I get tired of the nanny sass of chatgpt. I don’t always want to gaslight a bot just to get a simple question answered.

Also, it might be because i'm not on mainland US, but its unavailable 90% of the time for me.

It's not actually the same model. ChatGPT uses InstructGPT, which is davinci-003 with added RLHF training, which makes it a lot better at instructed tasks.

Still experimenting with their API, but I did build this to offer an alternative for when their service is down. I'm not sure if their API is on the same server as their main GPT service. https://trackmybot.com

Playground requests are not free, but OpenAI gives everyone (I think) $18.00 free trial quota. Maybe you could bypass this for now using multiple accounts, but ultimately playground is not meant to be free. (Codex is free though as it's currently in beta)
