Why no HN live chat?
I think we would all be able to cooperate and accomplish a lot more if we had a live chat. Why isn’t there one?
Live chat is terrible if you want to build an async community where browsing is the primary thing people do. Chat doesn’t preserve anything in an easily findable way, doesn’t organize things into topics, isn’t easy to go back to.
I can’t stand the move “communities” have made to chat interfaces. It’s like if someone said “what if we replaced all libraries with just a warehouse full of people talking”. Chat communities are a significant step back in terms of knowledge transfer and creation and I think are more a highlight of how anti social the world is becoming.
The SNR goes way, way, way down with live chat. The brilliant people who take time to write long, well thought out comments, are not typically the same people to have the free time to sit in a chatroom all day.
Personal opinion: Without many tools to promote and demote messages, I'd argue group chat is one of the least valuable forms of communication, if your goal is to read something thoughtful or educational.
We've got to figure out how to have more than one page of comments first. The technology's almost there.
It probably wouldn’t have long and well thought out messages that makes HN what it is
I think browsing with JS enabled on HN is against the TOC
If hn became a live chat site, I might stop using it. I have enough things yanking at my attention already, speaking for myself
Reading is enjoyable, talking to strangers is not.
There was an unofficial hackernews channel on freenode but generally people here hate IRC.
Join #startups on Libera IRC.
HN really needs a collapse all child comments
It would be somewhat trivial to build a live chat browser extension and have rooms per post.
