What will the future of consumer social look like?

With incumbents dominating the social media industry for more than a decade, what would it take for a new social app to come out and at least compete with these platforms (IG, Snap, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok). I refuse to believe that the current platforms we have will forever be the go-to social platforms, there needs to be a change in consumer social, something different. The question is: What will it take for a new social app to compete with the current platforms?

What are your predictions for the future of social media?

I think (and hope) it'll be fairly fragmented communities, spread across lots of apps and websites and forums for various niches. Some communities will be built Discourse, others on new apps and sites built on ActivityPub, others will be built on completely new tech and ideas.

I really hope the large one-size-fits-all / winner-takes-all "social media" communities go away. It's their massive scale that creates problems like lack of moderation, toxicity. I'm really hoping we can capture the "forum feeling" of meeting and learning from cool/fun/interesting internet strangers.
