What will HN look like after the apocalypse?

Assume the world electrical grid is mostly down, but some pockets of grid and internet connectivity remain. Although many regular services are spotty if online at all: gas, water, oil, freight, government.

In this scenario, what would we be seeing on HN? What sorts of stories, comments and posts?

Show HN: I rewrote my gatling gun turret code in Rust and got eaten by zombies while I was waiting for it to compile

We've seen a few crises here - COVID, Ukraine war. Most of the time HN goes into full panic, more so than people on most other social media sites. And then it quiets down and we go back to talking about burnout.

I think it's because the people here are mostly comfortable upper middle class planning for retirement. Most humans are trying to have enough to survive the next month. A delivery driver once said the odds of dying and long term injury from a motorcycle accident were much higher than dying to COVID. Someone in Ukraine here said similar about the odds of dying to a missile or drone attack. But the odds of dying without a job is pretty damn high so they do their dangerous jobs nonetheless. Blue collars tend to be less affected.

White collars, however, tend to have a 35 year plan and there's all kinds of black swan events that can mess up that plan. People go into lockdowns with more grief than losing a parent.

Ads for guns and ammo and articles on diy such as: make your own gun, water purifier, etc.

If essential services and utilities collapse as well as govt functions, you’re talking about a mass panic, looting, and just pure chaos as every family fends for itself.

Most likely, there would be no HN.

Ask HN: What do you think of my DIY lighter?

top comment: Explain what this does that flint and steel cannot.

There will still be one holdout complaining about Stripe’s lack of customer support.

👤 warrenm
what makes you think HN would be one of the "pockets of grid and internet connectivity" remaining?

If it were, why would you be wasting your time on it instead of trying to survive?

👤 labarilem
I guess mostly DIY for survival and (un)dead startups looking for brains.

Year of Linux in the dust teepee.

And a lot of articles about DIY robokillers.

Likely there will still be anti-Musk articles.
