How do companies support their developers work?


Hey HN,

I'm a developer at a large company and I'm curious to know how other companies are supporting their developers in their work. I'm specifically interested in the ways companies are helping developers focus on their work and remove obstacles that can get in the way.

Do you work at a company that has implemented any unique or effective practices for supporting developers? Are there any specific tools, processes, or policies that have made a significant difference for your team?

The easiest thing (not only 100% free, but potentially even results in significant cost-savings in a few ways) that companies can do is allow for a more flexible work environment.

Whether it's choosing your working hours (some people are early birds and some are not) or giving more flexibility as far as remote/hybrid choices, people are happier when they have a life-work balance not a work-life balance.

Maybe you need some common "office hours" to have a chance to talk and bounce ideas off of people, but otherwise you should trust that smart people and well-run teams know what they have to do and will get it done.

Yep - I work at a great place in this regards (smallish company which helps I am sure)

  1. Remote/hybrid working - dev choice
  2. Good gear
  3. Dedicated time for addressing tech debt/training (Friday's for us)
  4. Supportive training plan - it's part of the review
  5. Minimize meetings
