In general, "salesperson" implies a single transaction. You go to the Apple Store, you talk to a salesperson, you walk out with a big iPhone and a light wallet. Note that Apple calls them "specialist" or something, see point above.
"Account" implies an ongoing relationship with a steady stream of transactions, such as an advertiser with a large account on an ad platform. The account manager's role would be a) make sure to keep the account and b) find ways for the account to spend more money in a way that's beneficial to both.
Account executives typically sign new accounts, so they are overall selling the value of the ongoing stream of transactions.
Further muddying the waters is that all these roles are under the "Sales" org, so you could arguably say an account manager is in sales even if they're not a salesperson you meet at a retail store.
There's no real difference in most circumstances. However, each title relates slightly differently to the function of the role.
A 'salesperson' is a person related to sales. They sell a product or service. They're on the phone or in meetings with customers/clients all the time doing that job.
An 'account executive' is a person related to an account. They handle an account on behalf of a client/customer for products/services that require them.
In reality, account management is often simply upsell of a product/service, so account executives are salespeople at the end of the day.
I think a major difference is that if someone is titled a 'salesperson'/'sales executive' then you're likely to only ever speak to them at the start of a product journey. After onboarding you'll be given to an 'account executive/manager' and they'll look after you henceforth, including any future selling of new products/features.
There's a huge overlap between the two. As individuals a salesperson is someone who wants to sell and move on, and account executive is someone who wants to form a relationship with you and keep you happy in the long-term.
I appreciate all of them!
I am hopelessly and horrendously naive -- about any and all aspects of a business or corporation that involve anything to do with sales, advertising, marketing, etc., etc.
But I am looking to school myself -- in this heretofore unknown murky area...
So I'm looking through non-Programmer job ads one day -- in earnest hopes to learn more about the mystical black corporate art of sales...
I see that some ads that advertise that "Salespeople" -- are wanted/desired by the business and/or corporation in question...
And I see some ads that state that "Account Executives" -- are preferred...
Now, can anyone on HN, any smart person -- tell me (again, a hopelessly naive idiot! Anyone, anyone? ? (...Bueller, Bueller?
