Have IRL tech meetups rebounded in your area?

My area had plentiful IRL tech meetups before 2019. You could find meetup groups for specific languages and technologies, or just communities of enthusiasts who were learning or hacking together.

These days, it's very hard to find events in my area that aren't online. And the online events are usually prerecorded videos and marketing pitches. Even extremely popular topics (like web development) have basically zero IRL presence within a 50-mile radius.

I keep waiting for the community to rebound, but I'm not sure it ever will. I've started a group of my own, but it's also very slow to grow.

Have IRL meetups and communities in your area rebounded to 2019 levels yet?

They announced pricing changes over the last few years which I'm apparently not the only person confused about. That combined with practically all meetups being reset due to covid, I'm not surprised it's having a slow time getting back on it's feet.

I organize the python Atlanta group and have began working at the start of last year to go back to in person events. We finally had our first one in September 2022. Then a well set up event in December 2022 (thanks to JFrog btw).

Goal for this year is to continue improving the events and turn them into mini conferences and workshops. Pyatl is rather old and there’s a big membership.

I’m also expecting to support other local groups in the process of restarting their events. Local meetups are crucial for the industry and we need them to come back better than ever.

Protip: volunteer at your local groups. Doesn’t take much time and the benefits are really good.

In Los Angeles its super mixed, crypto people powering through likes the grateful dead, alot of promotion for various brands of mixed quality, every shared workspace/club claims to have high quality ones I just dont think 2k a quarter is worth the cost.

Im looking.

I've looked into real life meetups numerous times but they always seem highly tailored to those just starting out in programming or electronics, rather than users deep in the weeds.

FOSDEM should be in about a month so I'll let you know. Although I kind of hope the coof eliminates a quarter to half the crowd so you can move and get in to see some stuff.

My computer club, APCU likely will never meet in person again. We were shrinking before Covid hit, but hanging on. We now do all our meetings on zoom.

I don't really go to any, but I hear the 2600 meeting in my area has restarted. Seems like there weren't that many to begin with in this area.
