Vonnegut's _Player_Piano_. In particular, I keep thinking back to this 1950s view of a computer driven society, based on 1950s computers. "He was convicted by the court computer, and we even replaced all the vacuum tubes to make sure it was an accurate verdict". Mind boggling to think about how many transistors would be involved in modern day society and what replacement of them would involve (time, cost, landfill).
I also really enjoyed _Project_Hail_Mary_.
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer
